Sierra
Lodge – Creel, Chihuahua, Mexico
The Unique Experience… Comfort in Wilderness Isolation
Right
on the Continental Divide, at 7600 feet, nestled against the side of a small
pine-scented valley with a stream rushing by the front door, is our beautiful
little 22-room Sierra Lodge – a rustic jewel built of rich-toned varnished
logs. Located just about 25 minutes outside of Creel, the lodge is in the
heart of some of the most beautiful Copper Canyon country I’ve traveled!
Step up onto the long, tiled front porch, and settle into your favorite log
chair. The porch overlooks the Cusarare River, which twists and winds around
huge boulders, eventually dropping over a 100-foot cliff, into deeper canyons.
The guest rooms are roomy and especially cozy. This place is for hikers and
folks who want to relax, without the distractions of TV, telephones and cell
phones. There’s no electricity! The light from kerosene lanterns casts a glow
against the richly varnished log walls and deep red, tile floor. Small log
stoves warm the room. Beautiful artist renderings of canyon scenes are depicted
on the adobe walls of some of the rooms. After a day on the trails, there’s
nothing like a hot shower in your private bath, and huge terry towels. Head
over to the dining room where a fire is roaring in the stone fireplace. Good,
strong coffee is brewing on the cast iron stove in the lodge kitchen. This
is your hideaway!
Every season has special reasons to visit the Sierra Lodge. Hiking in the
vicinity of the lodge is ideal in every season.
Roberto, the manager at the Sierra Lodge can arrange Tarahumara guides for
you, for an additional fee. In late summer and fall, the canyons are especially
green due to regular rainfall. In winter and early spring, the days are generally
sunny with daytime temperatures ranging from 45 degrees to 70 degrees. Nights
are frosty temperatures into the 30's. Weather can be unpredictable and snow
can blanket the canyons some days. Along about the end of February and into
March, meadows are covered with sprinkles of yellow, purple and red flowers.
Sierra Lodge Price: $70 US per person per night (increases to $80 per person beginning Jan. 1, 2008).

Important Note: Copper Canyon Lodges is operated by and the property of Inmobiliaria Sierra Madre S.A. de C.V., a Mexican Corporation with offices in Chihuahua, Chihuahua, Mexico. By American standards this is a dangerous trip. If you go, you are subject to the same life and danger that rural Mexicans live with. No modifications have been made for American visitors – this is the real thing. Understand fully that there is a great difference in the standards of safety rural Mexicans accept and what you expect in the U.S. or even urban Mexico. I am happy to tell you that generally you are much safer with regards to people here, than in the U.S. The dangers are the environment and primitive travel, including but not limited to ------ falls, bad trails, lightning, venomous creatures, tricky horses, mules and burros, worn out saddles, rivers, bridges, etc. Also, there is no place for a helicopter to put down and cell phones do not work here. A health emergency is often fatal and the local folks are very accepting of death as a normal event. If you do not understand this thoroughly, we advise you not to travel off road anywhere in Mexico.
