You hike hard in the woods all day – You follow the river, turn right into a surprising shady valley.  The path winds up into the pines.  You disappear into the mountains and wind-shaped boulders of Mexico’s Copper Canyon wilderness – still largely unexplored.  You discover waterfalls, hot springs, uncharted archaeological sites, or a tiny Indian rancho.  You ask “How was the corn this year?”

You come home to the Sierra Lodge – A hot shower, giant towel. Snapping fire and cold margarita. Then dinner – homemade soup, fresh salsa, warm, soft tortillas wrapped in a cotton cloth, nested inside a Tarahumara basket, and just great local Mexican cuisine – prepared by Chef Arturo. And good company! That’s what it’s all about!

My favorite hike is a climb up the mesa nearest the Sierra Lodge and along the ridge (ruins of small settlements here!). The views into the Tarahumara Indian valley below are awesome!

On previous hikes up here, I have spotted traps set by Tarahumaras (rock and stick traps), covered by brush, in a stand of trees. Below the ridge, in a pine-covered tiny valley there are several cave dwellings with pottery shards and one huge clay pot still intact, as if the “owner” may return at any moment.  This is where I like to sit on a boulder, in the sun, and munch on my bean burrito.  This is indeed God’s Country!

"Copper Canyon is one of the most extensive, isolated and unexplored canyon systems in the world.  This is a backpacker's paradise."
