Highland Cusárare—Visit the high country among the canyons — Home to the Tarahumara Indians
Explore the real Copper Canyon country! Despite comparisons to the Grand Canyon, Copper Canyon is different. “Grand Canyon is more vivid, with richer colors. Copper Canyon is greener, mistier, more like the Smoky Mountains,” according to Skip McWilliams, founder of the Copper Canyon Lodges.
Pine-studded countryside, giant boulders strewn alongside meandering rivers, weird wind-eroded tall boulders reach up to the sky—this is home to the Tarahumara Indians. Some of them still live in caves. Explore the land near the Sierra Lodge and you may discover one of these hidden caves. But please remember—leave pot shards and primitive tools where you see them; Tarahumaras are semi-nomadic by nature and may return at any time to their cave home. This is their private space.
Discover the natural beauty of a 100-foot waterfall, and a small Tarahumara village called Cusárare. This small village is tucked between giant boulder hills, in a small valley just about an hour’s walk from the lodge.
The high country mesas, mountains and forests are at an elevation of nearly 8,000 feet, and provide ample opportunities for exploring. This is definitely off-the-beaten-path travel!
The Sierra Lodge is the perfect rustic hotel for the adventure-minded folks who also like a little luxury; no electricity, wood-burning stoves, lots of hot water in the modern tiled bath, and freshly-prepared meals. “Be silent of mind in this place. Do not trap this in definitions of our science. Do not name these things or study these people. Drink them only with child-eyes. Touch them only with a wordless heart.”
